About the formats
HEIC
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format Apple has used for iPhone and iPad photos since iOS 11. It stores images with the HEVC codec, which keeps files roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG at the same quality. The catch: support outside the Apple ecosystem is patchy — many Windows apps, Android devices, websites and printing services still refuse HEIC files.
WebP
WebP is Google's image format for the web, offering smaller files than JPG and PNG with both lossy and lossless modes plus transparency. Browsers handle it well, but plenty of desktop software, older tools and upload forms still reject it — which is why images saved from the web often need converting.
