About the formats
BMP
BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap format from the early 90s. Files are enormous — often 20–50× larger than an equivalent JPG — with no visual benefit for photos, so converting is almost always worthwhile.
JPG
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported image format ever made — every camera, phone, program and website accepts it. It compresses photos efficiently but doesn't support transparency, and each re-save at low quality degrades the image a little more.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my BMP get?
Typically 95–98% smaller as JPG or WebP, and 50–80% smaller even as lossless PNG, because BMP applies no compression at all.
Does converting to JPG reduce image quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, but at a high quality setting the difference is invisible to the eye — and the file gets much smaller, ideal for photos and sharing. Pixloc lets you set the quality with a slider and adds a white background, since JPG has no transparency.
Are my files really private?
